Starcraft II Release Date Set
Posted by Kris on 5.4.2010 - 0 Comments

Mark July 27th on your calanders as the day you'll be playing StarCraft II: Wings Of Liberty...
Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. announced today that its highly anticipated real-time strategy game, StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty, will arrive in stores throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Russia, Mexico, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, and the regions of Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau starting on July 27, 2010. Players will also be able to purchase StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty directly from Blizzard Entertainment shortly after the retail launch.
"We've been looking forward to revisiting the StarCraft universe for many years, and we're excited that the time for that is almost here," said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. "Thanks to our beta testers, we're making great progress on the final stages of development, and we'll be ready to welcome players all over the world to StarCraft II and the new Battle.net in just a few months."
StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty is the sequel to Blizzard Entertainment's 1998 hit StarCraft, which has been hailed by players and critics worldwide as one of the top real-time strategy games of all time. Sporting a vibrant 3D-graphics engine, StarCraft II will once again center on the clash between the protoss, terrans, and zerg, with each side deploying legions of veteran, upgraded, and new unit types. Unparalleled online play for StarCraft II will be available through a new version of Battle.net, Blizzard Entertainment's world-renowned gaming service. Battle.net has been redesigned from the ground up to be the premier online gaming destination for Blizzard gamers, with several enhancements and new features, such as voice communication, cloud file storage, leagues and ladders, achievements, stat-tracking, and more.
The solo campaign for StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty will continue the epic saga where it left off in StarCraft: Brood War. The story line chronicles the exploits of marshal-turned-rebel-leader Jim Raynor and features both familiar faces and new heroes. Players will be able to tailor the experience, choosing their own mission path and selecting technology and research upgrades to suit their playing style throughout the 29-mission campaign. Several challenge-mode mini-games will also be included, with focused goals designed to ease players into the basics of multiplayer strategies.

Site Update
Posted by Kris on 12.7.2009 - 0 Comments

Hello, for those of you that don't know me, I'm Kris and I'm the webmaster / founder / dictator here at StarcraftLive.net.
It's been a long time since a news post and a long time since the content of this website has been updated. Long story short, keeping up to date on news is hard and keeping the website up to date is even harder still. It takes a lot of time to cultivate a website like this... you have to be timely or no one cares and it takes a good deal of time to keep up with all the news. Performing such tasks myself has proven to be impossible given my busy schedule and general hatred of reposting news and cropping screen shots.
While Grunt, alethioS, and others have done a great job in my absence (or perhaps I have done a poor job in their absence), their lives too have taken them in different directions. And that has left StarcraftLive.net in a general sense of disrepair.
It is sad it has come to this (especially since in early days we received numerous comments, including one from Blizzard themselves about the high quality of news and timeliness of said news posted here). Just because you don't see updates now though does not mean this site is done. Far from it...
What direction StarcraftLive.net takes next is still undecided, but the site will rise again.
In the mean time, myself and several past contributors to this website frequent the forums at ForumsX.net if you ever want to say "Hi" or join in some lively conversations.
You may also want to check out some of the games for Xbox Live Indie Games that I am personally creating at Fun Infused Games. While certainly not of the high quality or depth of Blizzard's games, I still like to think they're enjoyable.s

Starcraft II Will Be a Trilogy
Posted by Kris on 10.14.2008 - 0 Comments

No doubt you've heard the big Starcraft II news that they're splitting one game into three (if not, surprize!). VoodooExtreme has a good interview with Blizzard's Bob Colayco explaining the who, what, where, and why's of this shocking decision.
First of all, the development team had been planning for a long time that StarCraft II would include two expansion sets. So from that perspective, the answer is from the beginning, or near to it. From the sense of, “when was it decided that each campaign would focus entirely on a single race and telling one enormously epic story?” then that decision started coming together around the time that the first details of our single-player campaign design were announced at BlizzCon 2007.
Once the dev team started delving into what it would take to create a branching campaign, with meaningful choices in missions, technology upgrades, and all the story elements – the in-game and pre-rendered cutscenes, the interactive sets with dialogue, news reports, and all those aspects, it became clear that it was going to be a ton of stuff to try and cram into one product.
Rather than compromise on the massive vision that was coming together for all three races just to fit a short campaign for each of them into one product, it became clear that the right thing to do from a gameplay, story, and design perspective was to go *big* on all three races. We’re talking about 26-30 missions for –each- chapter of the trilogy, more cutscenes, more interactive elements, and campaign choices that become more meaningful. Each campaign has more room to breathe in this way, and the storywriters can be more creative in how they bring the plot along, and the designers can get really creative in the mission designs and objectives throughout each campaign.
Get the full skinny (that means read the whole article) right here.
Here's another interview with Bob where he addresses concerns that splitting the game up is simply a money grab pushed onto Blizzard by Activision.

Interviews
- Here's one from TVG
- One from videogaming247, in which Frank Pearce, Blizzard co-founder, said that the possiblity of adding a fourth race will probably come up in discussion for an SC2 expansion (and this has already been taken by some to mean that there will be a fourth race.)
Books
- BlizzPlanet has the (rather nice) cover for the upcoming Graham McNeill novel I, Mengsk for your viewing right here.
- They also have a 20-page preview for the StarCraft: Frontline comic, which you can check out at their website here.
- In the meantime, here (I haven't done so yet because I am wary of teh epik spoilarz). :]
- Amazon now has the (also pretty) cover for the final book in Christie Golden's Dark Templar Trilogy - Twilight. Check it out! There's also a blurb on the book available at Popshoponline.

Looking for Poll Ideas
Posted by Kris on 3.27.2008 - 0 Comments

Hello all... I may follow Starcraft 2 closely, but one thing that's not my bag is coming up with great new poll ideas (as you maybe have noticed by the fact that they change so infrequently). That's why I'm making a call out to you, the readers of StarcraftLive. If you've got an idea for a poll you'd love to see run on this site, by all means let me know! You can either email me at webmaster@starcraftlive.net or leave them in the comments for this news.
I look forward to hearing your suggestions. And if you have ideas beyond just polls, let me know those too!m

XML Feed on Starcraft Live
Posted by Kris on 2.27.2008 - 0 Comments

I just wanted to point out two things with our XML feed here on the site. First off, it hasn't been working right since the switch over to the new layout. Worry no more, the feed is back up and running at the same URL it always was and will continue to be updated as the site is updated. Anytime we save or update news on the site, our news feed is instantly updated.
Second, I just wanted to point out that we have an XML feed (in case you haven't figured that out yet). Click here for details on what an XML/RSS feed is and how to subscribe.

Community Section Released.
Posted by alethioS on 1.25.2008 - 0 Comments

Blizzard recently released their own fansite :D It's a community section addition to starcraft II's home page. While the updates seem to be lagging behind a bit, some exclusive content is likely to be released on this site. You can check it out here. Karune also had this to say: This community page has been created to be a launching pad for the future community projects I have planned. BlizzCast, Q&As, Monthly Discussions, Community Spotlights, the Fan Site Program, and 'future projects' (which there are still many in production) will be hosted here. Feel free to keep tabs on this page for StarCraft II specific community updates. Expect us to keep a close eye on this page, and for us to notify you whenever new content goes up. :)n.ru/t

More on Activision-Blizzard
Posted by -G R U N T- on 12.3.2007 - 0 Comments

First, the Activision Blizzard website can be accessed here - www.activisionblizzard.com. It contains a press release, a fact sheet, and more of the usual PR mumbo-jumbo. Not even a new SC2 screenshot :P. Gamespot and IGN have already interviewed Mike Morhaime, President of Blizzard Entertainment, on this surprising merge. Here's a sample from Gamespot's interview: GS: Now, one of the first questions people ask when a deal like this goes down is, "Who's getting laid off?" Are there any plans for staff reduction of redundant positions in the Activision Blizzard organization? What's going to happen in terms of the management structure? MM: Bobby Kotick will be CEO of Activision Blizzard, the public entity traded on NASDAQ of which Vivendi will have a majority interest. I will remain as president and CEO of Blizzard Entertainment, reporting to Bobby. Michael Griffiths will be president and CEO of Activision publishing, also reporting to Bobby. Activision publishing will include all non-Blizzard Vivendi games assets. Check out that pro evasion regarding potential staff layoffs and redundancies. Anyway, you can read the rest of Gamespot's interview here. Now for a snippet from IGN's interview: IGN: Are there any plans to cut divisions or staff that have been made redundant by the two companies coming together? Mike Morhaime: I think it's really too early to talk about stuff like that. I do know that's not our reason for doing the deal. We felt that the two businesses are very complimentary and I think there's going to have to be an evaluation of projects that are in development and there will be a green light process going forward. Projects that don't look like they're going to be profitable won't get green lit. There seems to be a pattern in the samples from the interviews that I pick :P. I guess it's one of the things that really bothers me about the deal, but I'm still a little dazed that it happened in the first place :P. You can read the entirety of IGN's interview here. 1UP has also interviewed Mike Morhaime. As always, here's a sample: 1UP: So lots of folks on the message boards are expressing anxiety over what all this means in terms of Blizzard watering itself down in this transaction, that it's going to mean less that a game is a Blizzard game. Morhaine: The thing is, Blizzard has been part of public entities for a very long time. There is nothing about this transaction that changes any of our philosophies or commitments to quality or how we intend to continue developing, publishing, or servicing our games. In fact I spent quite a log time talking to Bobby Kotick [Activision Chairman and CEO and now President and CEO of Activision Blizzard] and Brian Kelly [Co-chairman of Activision and now Activision Blizzard] and others, to make sure they understood Blizzard's development philosophies, our core values, the things that we hold very important, which are very much in line with the things our players expect of us, and there was a great deal of understanding. Also, they share a lot of our philosophies about quality, and they believe, as we do, that the best way to run a business in this industry is to develop high quality games. Click here for the rest. Finally, Gamasutra has come up with a compelling analysis o
